South Africa qualified as hosts of the competition. The former apartheid colony made their debut in the competition in 1996 and lifted the title. They have appeared seven times in all.

Ghana were the first team to qualify for the finals, progressing comfortably with a 1-0 victory in Lilongwe and qualifying 3-0 on aggregate on Saturday.
Afriyie Acquah fired home the winner for the Black Stars after just three minutes, from a corner.
Malawi had their chances, but the hosts could not find a way back into the tie after conceding the early goal.
The four-time Nations Cup winners have so far qualified for the competition 18 times.
